Picture yourself on a relaxing afternoon stroll along winding streets and lush, wooded landscapes, all the while being enveloped by a feeling that hearkens back to the city’s rich past. Located just 5 miles northeast of Downtown, Druid Hills was one of Atlanta’s first and finest suburbs, famous at the time for its innovation in suburban design and now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It's also well-rooted in the world of research and academia, thanks to the prestigious Emory University and affiliate institutions like the CDC and the American Cancer Society in town. As one of Atlanta's most affluent neighborhoods, Emory-Druid Hills is the kind of place that takes you away from the urban noise and chaos, towards a more serene escape for your senses.

Druid Hills: An Architect's Work of Art

Druid Hills has quite the bragging rights to add to its already-impressive reputation: the deliberate streetscapes and beautiful open spaces of the neighborhood were envisioned by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who famously designed the grounds of the United States Capitol in Washington, DC and arguably one of the most famous parks in the world, Central Park in New York, among others. You’ll find in Druid Hills some of the finest displays of residential architecture in Georgia, for which there are even public tours to showcase these elegant examples of real estate and exquisitely-landscaped gardens, as well as providing history lessons about the area. It's a little-known fact that those who helped bring Olmsted’s vision of Druid Hills come to life at the turn of the 20th century would later be inspired to shape other neighborhoods of the same caliber, such as Ansley Park and Morningside, both adjacent to Piedmont Park, to name a few.

Things to See in Emory-Druid Hills

The entire neighborhood of Emory-Druid Hills encompasses plenty of green spaces for everyone (or perhaps it's the other way around). The 65-acre old-growth Fernbank Forest and the Druid Hills Golf Club, for example make for different types of green, but still take up a large area of the neighborhood. There's also the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Fernbank Science Center, both of which are popular educational institutions for younger students. In town are cultural institutions that give a good balance to all that nature, such as the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, where visual, literary and performing arts classes and workshops are offered, and the Michael C. Carlos Museum, which houses impressive exhibits of world artifacts ranging from prehistory to classical periods.
